Art Walk will be on June 12, 2010 (Saturday) from 4:00-9:00PM in downtown Whitesburg. The library will display the art works from the Omni Gallery and David Lucas' paintings.
The library will sell cookies and candies on June 12 to benefit ARH's fund raising efforts.



2010 SUMMER READING PROGRAM

"MAKE A SPLASH @ YOUR LIBRARY- READ!"
We are ready for 2010 Summer Reading Program.

Register now for eight weeks of fun, reading, stories, songs, crafts, prizes, contests and refreshments.
We will start our program on June 14, at the Harry M. Caudill Memorial Library with Mark Comley, the magician. His presentation will be at 6:30 PM.
The Madcap Puppets will present Aesop's Fables on June 22 at 6:30 at HMCL, and the popular animal show with Tammy Elza will tour all the libraries on June 29 starting at 10:30 AM at HMCL.

We are also partnering with the Kentucky Education Savings Plan Trust (KESPT) to award $1000.00 dollars for a college fund to sixteen children who will attend SRP. A parent needs to register his/her child to be eligible to this contest.


Art Exhibit going on at the Harry M. Caudill Library

David Lucas's paintings of the civil war,civil war heroes and soldiers' portraits, sculptures and metal art are currently on display at the library. The exhibit will run for the whole month of April.

Benny Hamilton

Local authors will read and sign books.

Benny Hamilton, a children's author will read his book: "The Goat in the Coat" on March 4, (Thursday) at 10:30 AM to the children of Letcher County. Hamilton is from Leslie County.
Neva Bryan an award- winning poet was born in Prestonburg was raised in WIse, Virginia will sign books on March 6, (Saturday). Her book "St. Peter's Monsters" is the story of Peter, a homesick college student teetering on the age of alcohilism. His story takes another turn when a mysterious woman enters his life.

HALLOWEEN PARTY at the Harry M. Caudill Memorial Library

 

We will hold our annual Halloween Party on October 29 at 6:00PM. Our program will feature a play: "Hansel & Gretel", games, contests songs and stories. This is a family program. Come dressed in your favorite costume and win a prize. For more information, call the library.

Basic Quilting Class

On April 9 and every second Tuesday of the month at 5:30 to 6:30 PM will be a quilting/sewing class at the Harry M. Caudill Memorial Library. Faye Shepard will teach the basics of quilting and at the end of the session, participants will complete one quilt square. All materials will be provided for an initial fee of $15.00. Registration is limited to 10 students. Refreshments will be served. (Please bring your own scissors.)

Scrapbooking

Mark your calendars!! April 23 at 6:00PM. Sue Bates of Mountain Scraps will demonstrate the techniques of scrapbooking. The seminar is free and open to the publiand refreshments will be served. There will be a fee of $15.00 (fifteen dollars) for materials to complete a project. The materials will be provided by Sue.

 


Photo Exhibit on Display

The photo journalism class of Western Kentucky University documented the ordinary lives of Letcher County during their Spring visit in 2009. The photo exhibit at the Harry M. Caudill Memorial Library captures the images and the soul of each subject. The 30 photos will be on display until June 15. To view the exhibit on line go to : www.acpworkshop.org

 


Art Exhibit of Anna Daniel Hall

Anna Daniel Hall, a noted artist from Letcher County is a self taught artist who captures the beauty and soul of every subject that she paints. The library is fortunate to have Harry Caudill's and James Still's portrait portraits on permanent loan from their families. These portraits are Anna's works. Her exhibit will be on display until May 30.

Art classes: Joyce Vermillion, CRI certified in Ross Landscape I will teach the art class at the Harry M. Caudill Memorial Library on April 4 from 9:30AM to 1:30 PM.Cost of the course is $25.00. Call Joyce at 633 7940 to register.

National Library week: "Worlds connect @your library"

National Library Week (April 12-18, 2009) will be celebrated at all the libraries with an open house at the following locations:

• Lillian Webb Memorial Library on (Tuesday, April 14), Harry M. Caudill Memorial Library on (Wednesday, April 15) Jenkins Public Library on (Thursday April 16) and Blackey Public Library on ( Friday, April 17).

Drawings for prizes in every library, amnesty, free library cards, free refreshments.

Art Exhibits

David Lucas's art works are now on display at the Lillian Webb Memorial Library in Neon. His poignant portraits of soldiers, families and every day events remind us of the astounding beauty of our region and sometimes desperation over some of our conditions. The art exhibit will run through May. Lillian Webb Library is open on Mondays to Fridays from 9:00-5:00, and up to 2:00PM on Saturdays.

Fr. Randall's students will exhibit their works from April 12-24 at the Harry M. Caudill Memorial Library (Main Library). Meet the artists Day will be held on April 24 at 3:00PM. Refreshments will be served.

 

 

 

 

 

What's new:

Cowan Creek Storytellers will present "It's About Time" a collection of stories from Cowan Women about their years growing up on Cowan Creek. The event will be at the Blackey Public Library on Wednesday, March 18th at 6:00 PM. Performance is free.

Computer classes for beginners will soon be offered at the Harry M. Caudill Memorial Library. Schedules will be posted soon. This workshop is made possible by a grant of fourteen computers from the Appalachian Regional Commission and Connect Kentucky. Interested patrons may now register by calling the library at (606) 633 7547.


CONNECT KENTUCKY COMPUTERS

The Letcher County Library District is proud to annouce that we are a recepient of 14 computers from Connect Kentucky. The computers are now installed at the Main and branch libraries.

The public is invited toa Presentation Program at the Harry M. Caudill Memorial Library on February 26, 2009 at 12:00PM.


Festival of Quilts

The Letcher County Tourism and Convention Commission will exhibit an array of quilts made by quilters from the earliest times to the present.

Mountain Heritage Festival: "Making Tracks Through Letcher County"

Poster, Poetry and Essay Contests will be sponsored by the Library. Be sure to submit your entries by person by September 15 or by email. First prize winners will receive a $100.00 savings bond . Second and third prizes will receive ribbons. Rules for the contests maybe obtained from the library or to submit an entry via email : letcolib@bellsouth.net

Neon Days will be on September 13-14, 2008. Every one is invited to enjoy good food , arts and crafts.

The Book Discussion Clubat the Balckey Public Library will meet on September 29 to "Parchment of Leaves" by Silas House. Call the library at 633 4013 to participate and to obtain a copy of the book.

 

 

Story Time

STORY TIME will be held at the Lillian Webb Memorial Library on September 27, 2008 at 10:00 AM - 12:00PM. This is a program for K-3rd Grade.

Reserve your space now and call the library at 855- 7913 or 832 2043. Mrs. Rochelle Lamb is the Coordinator of this event.

Stuffed animals will be given to each child.

 

August 2008

Tournament

A Pokemon League Tournament will be held at the Main Library on September 6 at 1:00-2:00 PM. Pokemon packs will be awarded for prizes. Open to all. This tournament is sponosred by the Library and the Sword in the Stone.

Movie

Movie night is every third Friday of the month at 6:00PM. All children need to be accompanied by their parent or guardian. The movie is free however, popcorn, pizza and drinks may be purchased at the door. On September 19, a pirate movie will be shown to celebrate "National Talk like a Pirate Day".

 

August 2008

We want the Young Adults at the Library!!

Games. competitions, read alouds, homework help, computer games, safety issues, self help, instructions, booktalks, arts and crafts, movies and social network are among the activities that the library would like to offer to young adults at the library. If you are 12 years old and over, sign up and call the library to be in this elite group. Their will be an election of an advisory board and poliices will be formulated on Friday, March 28 at 4:00PM. Christmas Bazaar at the Blackey Public Library

Blackey will hold a Christmas Sale at the Blackey Public Library on Tuesday, December 4 from 4 to 8 PM. Visit with friends and enjoy light refreshments. Items for sale are homemade crafts, goodies and jewelry. Door prizes will be awarded to lucky patrons.


Come to the Annual Christmas Parade

The Christmas Parade in Whitesburg will be on December 7, 2007 at 6:00 PM on Main Street in downtown. Every one is invited. Santa will come to the library and read stories at 5:45 P.M.

Refreshments will be served and pictures with Santa will be at held at the lower level of the Harry M. Caudill Memorial Library after the parade.
